Bath, Stonehenge and Avebury

This morning we drove to Bath Spa so mom and dad could explore the ruins of the Roman baths. I visited the site in December so I just found a place to curl up with my laptop to organize photos and write some blog entries. As I walked through town I encountered a parade of politicians led by a youth marching band - a procession for a ceremony welcoming the new mayor. I snapped a few photos and got a really great one of a freckled girl playing the cymbals, but there are strict laws in the UK restricting the use of photos of children without consent so I can't use it here.

Mom and dad explored Bath in record time, taking in a walking tour and exploring the ruins. We headed out to see Stonehenge and were disappointed that our National Trust membership didn't give us access. I've been told that it's "still just a pile of rocks even when you get up close" so we just stuck our cameras through the fence and moved on.

Apparently army training takes place around here.

A chalk horse.
There's just a thin layer of soil on top of the chalk so you occasionally stumble on art dug into the hillsides.

When dad was in Bath he heard about another ancient site called Avebury with a henge and stone circle so we decided to stop by and take a look. The site is open to the public and there are walking paths among the five thousand year old stones.

Dad on top of one of the henge rocks.
This was before we saw the sign telling people not to climb them.
