Reflections on the Road Trip

Beyond the incredible memories made with my parents, two of the main things that stand out to me from this tour throughout England are:

1. Every little thing we do might matter tremendously.
2. Even the important things we do might not matter at all.

Putting those two points side-by-side probably makes me sound crazy, but visiting so many museums and historic sites throughout the country in such a short space of time made me realize the affect each of our lives might have on history.

There are so many monuments to people who were held in high esteem during their time on earth, but we no longer remember who they are or what they accomplished. There are other monuments to people who probably didn't feel like they were doing anything of tremendous importance during their life, but one little thing they did is remembered generations later.

I find it quite intimidating that my life has the potential to influence others. So many people have made small sacrifices or made a choice out of selfishness or sought an answer to a simple question or said something that challenged someone else and countless lives have been affected in either a positive or negative way. Even the smallest choices I make can potentially affect generations to come. Our lives are intertwined on so many levels and yet we tend to live as if what we do only affects us personally. The world is both much smaller and much bigger than that.
